Canadian Government and Citizenship
Our class is studying a new social studies unit. Your child will learn about the different levels of government in Canada, how laws are created and how decisions are made by government, the services provided by government, and how Canadian citizens of all ages can participate in government. Your child will also learn about the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship.
During this unit, we will investigate many social and environmental issues in Canada and consider why different groups may have different perspectives on issues. We will consider what each of us can do to be active citizens and ensure that our government serves the common good.

- Discuss the positions and platforms of members of Parliament in your riding.
- Attend a meeting of your municipal council or public hearing with your child.
- Encourage your child to write a letter to an elected representative or the media about an issue that concerns her or him.
- Include your child when volunteering in your community.
- Discuss current events and social and environmental issues with your child.
- Look for reliable sources of information on such issues together, and have your child explain his or her analysis and evaluation of the information to your
